Cultural Nutrition
Fueling Children’s Healthy Growth, Learning, and Play
Team Nutrition is an initiative of the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to support the child nutrition programs through training and technical assistance for foodservice, nutrition education for children and their caregivers, and school and community support for healthy eating and physical activity. Nebraska has been awarded the 2023 Team Nutrition Grant Supporting Nutrition Education for School- Aged Children. As part of this grant, NDE aims to improve access by increasing the number of students and families from underserved communities who are reached by nutrition education resources. Resources and recipes will be culturally appropriate for Nebraska communities and in the preferred languages of students and their families.
Recognizing Nebraska’s diverse rural and urban communities, NDE will honor and respect the unique cultures and values of each community by:
- Working with a translations services agency to translate educational materials curated as a part of grant objectives into the top non-English languages spoken in Nebraska schools.
- Conducting formative research to inform the development of culturally appropriate nutrition education materials for Nebraska communities for addition to the curated portfolio.
- Together with school nutrition services, collaborate with students, families, and the community to develop and implement recipes that align with various culinary traditions while meeting meal pattern requirements.
- Offer school nutrition trainings and resources for school coaches, teachers, afterschool program coordinators, and other applicable stakeholders.
