Equipment Grants

Equipment Grants

The Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 Agriculture Appropriations Act awarded the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) $25,000,000 to distribute to State Agencies for the purpose of awarding equipment assistance grants (EAG). Nebraska received $134,893 for equipment assistance to eligible school food authorities (SFA) participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The Nebraska Department of Education – Nutrition Services would like to award grants to as many eligible SFAs as possible.

The grant funds will allow SFAs to purchase equipment to serve healthier meals that meet the updated meal patterns, with emphasis on offering more fruits and vegetables in school meals, improving food safety and expanding access to the program.

To ensure all available grant funds are allocated to SFAs, Nutrition Services is releasing the grant application to all applicable schools participating in the NSLP. Districts that have a Net Cash Resource (more than three months operating expenses in the non-profit school food service account) are not eligible to apply for this grant; NDE encourages these SFAs to considering using the Net Cash Resource to purchase new or replace existing equipment.

Grant application review and awards will be based on the following priority criteria:

Priority 1:  School buildings in which 50 percent or more of the enrolled students were eligible for free or reduced priced meals, high need schools (e.g. schools in underserved areas such as rural areas not close to major metropolitan areas), schools with limited access to other resources, and age of food service equipment. (Note: Free and reduced percentages are based on the October 2016 meal claims.)

Priority 2:  School buildings in which less than 50% of the enrolled students were eligible for free or reduced price meals. (Note: Free and reduced percentages are based on the October 2016 meal claims.)

Priority 3:   School buildings that were previously awarded equipment grant funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 or the FY 2010, FY 2013, FY 2014, FY 2015, or FY 2016 Agricultural Appropriations Act.
