Certificate Renewals
Certificate/Permit Expirations
- Initial Teaching Certificate– expires August 31st in the fifth (5th) year following issuance or renewal.
- Standard Teaching Certificate– expires August 31st in the fifth (5th) year following issuance or renewal.
- Professional Teaching Certificate– expires August 31st in the tenth (10th) year following issuance or renewal.
- Alterative Teaching Permit– expires August 31st in the second (2nd) year following issuance.
- Career Education Permit– expires August 31st in the third (3rd) year of issuance.
- Post Secondary Permit– expires August 31st in the third (3rd) year of issuance.
- Military Teaching Permit– expires August 31st in the third (3rd) year following issuance.
- Conditional Permits– expiration differs depending on deficiencies.
Certificate/Permit Renewal Requirements
Initial, Standard or Professional Certificates Renewal Requirements:
Current Certificates or Certificates that have expired less than 5 years:
- Have taught or held a position requiring a teaching certificate for half time or more for one (1) school year within the past five (5) years in a legally operate school system. Please note that Nebraska teaching experience is verified on the NSSRS system, so you do not need to report this experience. OR
- Have completed six (6) credit hours in education or your content area within the past five (5) years while holding or qualified to hold a Nebraska teaching certificate that has not expired or has been expired for less than five (5) years.
Certificates that have been expired for more than five (5) years:
- Have taught or held a position requiring a teaching certificate for half time or more for one (1) school year within the past five (5) years in a legally operate school system. OR
- Have completed fifteen (15) specific semester hours in education within the past five (5) years if your teaching certificate has been expired for more than five (5) years. The hours must be recommended for the issuance of the teaching certificate by the certification officer of your approved teacher education institution. The courses need to include:
- A course in instructional techniques.
- A practicum consisting of one hundred or more clock hours of contact with students in the classroom setting, fifty percent of which shall consist of performing instructional duties under the supervision of a cooperating teacher.
- A course or courses which address current issues in education, including but not limited to, special education, gifted education, reading and writing in the content area, and school law.
- The remaining course work should be directly related to the applicant’s area of endorsement on their certificate.
Alternative Program Teaching Permits Renewal Requirements
- Submit a transcript documenting the completion of at least fifteen (15) semester hours towards the completion of the approved plan.
- Submit evidence of Human Relations Training.
- Continue to fulfill the requirements of obtaining the permit.
*Pathways 6 and 7 of the Alternative Program Teaching Permit are NOT renewable.
Career Education Teaching Permits Renewal Requirements
- Submit verification for the renewal of such permit from the superintendent of schools.
Postsecondary Teaching Permits Renewal Requirements
- Continue to be eligible to teach courses for college credit offered by a Nebraska postsecondary educational entity that has been approved for high school credit in Nebraska.
- Within three (3) years prior to the date of application, have taught one (1) or more courses that generate college credit and have been approved for high school credit in a Nebraska School. OR
- Within three (3) years prior to the date of application, have received three (3) semester hours of graduate credit in the applicant’s postsecondary content area.
Military Permits Renewal Requirements
- Continue to meet the initial requirements to receive a renewal for a military permit.
Certificate and Permit Expirations
- Standard Administrative Certificate– expires August 31st in the fifth (5th) year following issuance or renewal.
- Professional Administrative Certificate– expires August 31st in the tenth (10th) year following issuance or renewal.
- Alternative Program Administrative Permit– expires August 31st in the second (2nd) year following issuance.
Certificate/Permit Renewal Requirements
Standard and Professional Administrative Certificate Renewal Requirements:
Current Certificates or Certificates that have expired less than 5 years:
- Within five (5) years of application, have administered half-time or more for one (1) school year. OR
- Within five (5) years prior to application, have been employed as a faculty member in the educator preparation program of a standard institution of higher education or worked for the department of education. OR
- Within five (5) years of application have received six (6) semester hours of graduate credit in areas related to Educational Administration or Educational Leadership from a standard institution of high education.
Certificates that have been expired for more than five (5) years:
- Have previously qualified for or held a Standard or Professional Administrative Certificate
- Hold a current administrative certificate from another state and have administered one (1) year within the past five (5). OR
- Within five (5) years prior to application, received fifteen (15) semester hours of graduate coursework in areas related to Educational Administration or Educational Leadership.
Alternative Program Administrative Certificate Renewal Requirements:
- Alternative Program Administrative Certificates are nonrenewable.
Permit Expirations
- State Substitute Permit– expires August 31st in the fifth (5th) year following issuance.
- Local Substitute Permit– expires August 31st in the fifth (5th) year following issuance.
Permit Renewal Requirements
State Substitute Permit Renewal Requirements:
- Within five (5) years prior to the date of application, have taught in one (1) or more school systems for at least fifty (50) days OR
- Within five (5) years prior to the date of application, have received three (3) semester hours of education related coursework.
Local Substitute Permit Renewal Requirements:
- Can be renewed upon meeting the requirements for issuance.

- Special Services Certificate– expires August 31st in the fifth (5th) year following issuance or renewal.
- Special Services Permit– expires August 31st in the fifth year (5th) year following issuance or renewal.
- Provisional Special Services Permit– expires August 31st of the year following issuance.
Certificate and Permit Renewal Requirements
Special Services Certificate–
- Can be renewed upon meeting the requirements for issuance.
Special Services Permit–
- Continue to fulfill requirements.
- Within five (5) years prior to the date of application for renewal, have been employed as a coach for at least 1 year in a Nebraska School system OR within two (2) years prior to the application for renewal, have completed coursework in first aid, health and safety for coaches and fundamentals of coaching as set four in the special services coaching endorsement in 92 NAC 24.
Provisional Special Services Permit–
- First Renewal: Fulfil the requirements of the permit and submit a signed and dated statement from the institution verifying that the applicant has been admitted into an approved Master’s Speech Language Pathology Program.
- Second and Third Renewal: Continue to fulfill the requirements and submit a signed and dated statement from the institution of the remaining requirements for the endorsement and a transcript documenting six (6) hours completed in the past year in the Master’s Speech Language Pathology program.
