DHS Training Course Online:
Active Shooter, What You Can Do—The DHS recently released a valuable online training course titled “Active Shooter, What You Can Do (IS-907),” which is accessible through FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI). This 45-minute self-paced course is designed to help individuals recognize and respond to active shooter situations. Developed collaboratively, it covers both prevention and management strategies.
Upon completing the course, participants will earn a FEMA EMI certificate, demonstrating their knowledge in handling active shooter incidents. This initiative is part of a series, with IS-906, Workplace Security Awareness, also available for interested individuals. National Incident Management Systems – Training for Schools
FEMA Emergency Management Institute:
- IS-100.SC Introduction to the Incident Command System, I-100, for Schools
- The Introduction to the Incident Command System course is the foundation for higher-level ICS training. It covers the ICS’s history, features, principles, and organizational structure and its relationship with the National Incident Management System. The Emergency Management Institute developed its ICS courses collaboratively.
- IS-361: Multi-Hazard Emergency Planning for Schools
- This course teaches about developing, implementing, and maintaining a school emergency operations plan (EOP). It covers the importance of having an EOP and essential information on how it is developed, exercised, and maintained.

In today’s K-12 education landscape, schools grapple with diverse security risks, from targeted violence to natural disasters. Unique safety needs and challenges can affect a school’s ability to fulfill its educational duties and ensure a safe and supportive learning environment.
Discovery Education
Ready Classroom will provide elementary and middle school teachers with resources to integrate natural disaster preparedness information into their curriculum. The program is an extension of Ready Kids, a nationwide effort to encourage children and families to take action and prepare for emergencies. The online resource provides teachers with activities, lesson plans, and multimedia tools that teach students how natural disasters develop and inspire them to build emergency preparedness plans with their families. The site features grade-specific lesson plans (K-8), videos, games, puzzles, and bulletin board recommendations.
Center for Preparedness and Emergency Response Solutions
The Center for Preparedness and Emergency Response Solutions (CPERS) conducts research, planning, training, and education related to public health and healthcare emergencies. They bring programs and services to the people they serve by traveling nationwide to conduct in-person programs and develop web-based education for public health, health care, emergency responders, and businesses. CPERS provides training opportunities, aid with disaster planning and disaster preparedness exercises, and resources like a free-standing library, award-winning training videos, and a website loaded with resources.
