Student Resources

Students should understand schools can provide a wealth of resources to help in suicide prevention. Schools have teachers, counselors, coaches and administrators who can listen to a child’s concerns and direct them to the assistance they need. There are additional resources available to students to self-report or report about a classmate needing assistance through the report services of 988 & Safe2Help Nebraska with trained licensed personnel there to listen and support a student. A student should do the following when reporting for their self or for others who are having suicidal concerns:

  1. Be Honest when asked questions about the emotions and experiences that are currently challenging.
  2. Talk openly about negative feelings or rough times happening. These difficulties can be improved upon with the support and coping mechanisms that are available to improve a situation.
  3. Identify social connections with family, friends, adults, and/or caregivers that might help you or the person you may be concerned about.
  4. Seek professional help. These thoughts and feelings have available support systems that are treatable to aid those in need.

All students need to understand “that help is always available.!”

The NDE School Safety Team has also developed a Suicide Prevention Toolbox for Youth on the Ways to Support Yourself and Others.

Other Student Opportunities to Learn & Grow

Hope Squads train teams of students to know how to intervene and get help when suicidal concerns are evident. The teams cultivate a culture of support for one another. Students will share their thoughts and feelings with friends and classmates to change their school communities’ culture and climate.

Hope Squad

The key to suicide prevention is having the entire school community prepared to intervene and respond. These resources assist schools to protect students at risk of suicide and to offer targeted support for the school community in the aftermath of a suicide.  Links are provided with the Nebraska School Suicide Prevention Resource Guide
