Arts Education Standards Revision

Nebraska Revised Statute 79-760.01 requires the Nebraska State Board of Education to “adopt measurable academic content standards in the subject areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies.” In addition, the Nebraska Department of Education has developed content area standards for fine arts, physical education, and world languages. These content area standards provide a framework for quality teaching and learning for all content areas.

Standards Revision Timeline

Content Area Standards Revision Timeline has been developed and includes a tentative timeline for the review and revision of all content area standards. For more information on the revision process, please visit the NDE Content Area Standards page.

The Nebraska Department of Education will begin the revision of the 2014 Nebraska Arts Standards in February of 2025 with anticipated adoption in the Fall of 2026.

Public Input

The NDE’s Office of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment conducted a public input survey on the 2014 Nebraska Arts Education Standards in January 2025. Feedback from parents, employers, community members, and arts educators is an important part of the standards revision process. Data generated from the survey, including written comments, is considered as NDE staff work alongside Nebraska educators to review and revise the 2014 standards.

Stakeholders may continue to provide public input by emailing nde.fineartsstandarsinput@nebraska.gov.

As you provide input, please consider the following questions:

  • Are the current standards and indicators measurable, appropriately challenging, connected to real-world applications, clearly worded, scaffolded, and specific?
  • Do the 2014 standards reflect the arts education knowledge and skills required for employment or postsecondary education?
  • To what extent do the 2014 standards provide a high-quality framework that guides local instructional decisions?
