National Civics Bee
National Civics Bee Coming to Nebraska in 2026!
In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, Nebraska is excited to host the National Civics Bee—a nationwide competition that empowers middle school students to engage in civics, strengthen their communities, and showcase their leadership.
What Is the National Civics Bee?
The National Civics Bee is an annual competition open to all 6th–8th grade students in public, private, charter, and homeschool settings. Participation is free.
Students explore real civic issues, propose solutions, and compete for recognition and prizes at the regional, state, and national levels.
How It Works
Essay Entry
Students submit a written response to four questions proposing ideas to improve their communities.
Applications are open now and close February 3, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. HST.
Regional Competitions
Finalists will advance to one of seven in-person regional Bees hosted in:
Fremont, Columbus, Sarpy County, South Sioux City, Kearney, Cheyenne County, and Seward.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation will assign students to the nearest location.
Regional Prizes:
1st Place: Trophy + $500
2nd Place: Trophy + $250
3rd Place: Trophy + $125
Nebraska State Finals
The top three students from each regional competition will advance to the State Finals, held on:

State Prizes:
1st Place: Trophy + $1,000 + potential $5,000 school donation
2nd Place: Trophy + $500
3rd Place: Trophy + $250
National Championship
The Nebraska State Champion will represent our state at the National Civics Bee Championship in Washington, D.C. in Fall 2026—competing for national recognition and major awards.
National Prizes:
1st Place: Trophy + $100,000 529 College Savings Plan
2nd Place: Trophy + at least $25,000
3rd Place: Trophy + at least $15,000
