The wall was built (a) by the East German government, (b) to prevent Germans living in East Germany from leaving East Germany, and (c) it divided families; it resulted in the death and injury of many people who were shot trying tried to climb over the wall; it became a symbol of communist oppression and poverty, and so on.
  6. The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance of eastern European countries lead by the Soviet Union to oppose or counter the NATO Alliance. Its goal was to counter NATO, to protect the Soviet Union from attack, and to support the communist governments in power in Eastern Europe.
