Nebraska Education Corps

Program Goal

The Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) proposes to have six half-time AmeriCorps members who will form the Nebraska Education Corps to help students that have experienced unfinished learning caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and connect underserved youth that are English Language Learners, homeless, and system involved youth at a greater risk of educational failure with services in schools throughout the state of Nebraska. At the end of the first program year, the AmeriCorps members will be responsible for impacting 60 students that have experienced unfinished learning to have improved academic engagement and connect the underserved youth with services. In addition, the AmeriCorps members will leverage 30 volunteers who will be engaged in assisting students with academic support, mentoring, and family events.

Grant Summary

The Nebraska Education Corps will focus on providing support for students that are dealing with unfinished learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Students will receive support with Reading, Writing, and Math.  To achieve this goal, we will support students with limited English proficiency, those living in poverty, those learning below their grade level, and other underserved youth in Nebraska with relevant programming.

The program design and development are essential elements to provide excellent service delivery through the Nebraska Education Corps. Our members will serve in collaboration with the following NDE programs such as:  21st Century Community Learning Centers, Nutrition Services, School Health Services, School Mental Health, School Safety, and   Whole School, and Whole Community, Whole Child. This is aligned with the priority areas for our statewide investments which are access to comprehensive mental health services, reimagined family and community engagement, high-quality professional learning and bolstering the teacher pipeline, focus on unfinished learning and supporting learning acceleration, modernize information, data, technology, and process systems.
