2008 HONORS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Forty-one Nebraska high school graduates have been named Nebraska Honors Scholarship winners, and 118 college students will have their scholarships renewed for another year, according to the Nebraska Department of Education.

These scholarships are available under the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program, a federally funded program that began in 1987 to recognize the top senior scholars in the nation.

This year Nebraska received $234,000 in new federal funds for disbursement to selected scholars. Each winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship to help pay for their college education. Depending on future Congressional appropriations, this scholarship may be renewed three times.

Winners were selected using criteria established by a panel of educators from high schools and colleges in Nebraska. Under federal regulations, the criteria must emphasize academic achievement and promise and ensure equitable geographic distribution of awards. In addition, Nebraska’s selection process primarily considers student ACT scores. The 2008 new Nebraska Honors Scholarship recipients are:
