English Language Arts Standards Revision

The 2021 ELA standards are now available.

English Language Arts Standards Revision

Nebraska Revised Statute 79-760.01 requires the State Board of Education to develop a plan to review and update standards for reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies every seven years.  The current ELA standards, which cover the reading and writing requirements in the law, were approved in 2014. A group of Nebraska educators, led by the Nebraska Department of Education, is working to revise the 2014 standards, “Nebraska’s College and Career Ready Standards for English Language Arts.” Nebraska educators from pre-kindergarten to postsecondary, including public and non-public schools, helped develop the first draft of the proposed ELA standards.

Additional information about the process to review and revise the 2014 standards is included here.

With the State Board of Education approval, these standards create the framework for English Language Arts instruction in Nebraska. The ELA standards were approved on September 3, 2021.
