Dr. Mohamed Esa

Dr. Esa

Dr. Mohamed Esa earned his doctorate in German Studies at the University of Heidelberg. He is a full professor in the foreign language department at McDaniel College. In addition to teaching German language, literature and culture classes at all levels, he also offers courses on fairytales, the Arab world and Islam. Each year he hosts a full day of educational workshops for 1,000 middle and high school German students, and a very popular dinner during the Muslim fasting month.

Mohamed is/ was an advisor to various students groups at McDaniel College, the German House and Club, the Alpha Theta Gamma Multicultural Sorority, the Belly Dance Club and was the advisor of the Multicultural Student Association for over a decade. Over the past 15 years, Mohamed offered many workshops in the USA, Canada, Germany and Sweden on the effective use of German music, fairy tales and proverbs and idioms. His book on “Die Musik der Wise Guys im DaF Unterricht” was published in July 2013 in Cornelsen Verlag. Together with his colleagues Ingrid Zeller from Northwestern University, he wrote “Kurzfilm. German Short Films and Activities Manual,” which was published by Heinle in 2013. In addition, Mohamed lectures on Arab-German writers, Islam and the contributions of Arabs and Muslims to Western civilization.

Over the years, Mohamed has received numerous awards, among them the Ira G. Zepp Distinguished Teaching Award at McDaniel College, in 2007, the Bundesverdienstkreuz, the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2009, the Outstanding German Educator Award at the University level from the American Association of Teachers of German in 2009 and the Human Relations Award of the Carroll County Human Relations Commission in 2010 for his multicultural community outreach. In January he assumed a two-year term as the president of the American Association of Teachers of German.
