Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Basic Skills Testing Updated 3/13/14
Effective September 1, 2014, applicants taking a basic skills test to seek admission to an educator preparation program will be required to complete the reading, mathematics, and writing portions of the Core Academic Skills for Educators Test published by Educational Testing Service of Princeton, New Jersey.
Applicants for an entry level Nebraska certificate can use the Pre-Professional Skills test (Praxis I PPST) or the Core Academic Skills for Educators Test (Core Academic Test) to meet the Basic Skills Competency requirement.
Core Academic Test passing scores shall consisting of the following:
156 or above on the Core Academic Reading Test (5712)
150 or above on the Core Academic Mathematics Test (5732)
162 or above on the Core Academic Writing Test; or
A composite score of 468 on all three portions of the Core Academic Test, with no single test score being more than one point below the score required above, and upon the recommendation of a standard institution of higher education. (Candidates wishing to take all three Core Academic Tests at the same time should register for 5751 Combined Test. Scores will be reported by individual test, 5712, 5722, 5732.)
Praxis I PPST passing scores shall consist of the following:
170 or above on the reading portion of the Praxis I PPST
171 or above on the mathematics portion of the Praxis I PPST
172 or above on the writing portion of the Praxis I PPST; or
A composite score of 513 on all three portions of the Praxis I PPST, with no single test score being more than one point below the score required above, and upon the recommendation of a standard institution of higher education.
Applicants for an entry level Nebraska certificate may use a combination of passing scores from the Core Academic Test and the Praxis I PPST; however, use of a composite score is not an option when Praxis I PPST and Core Academic Tests are used in combination to meet the basic skills requirement. Nebraska teacher preparation candidates should verify with their institution that using a combination of basic skills tests or a composite score will be acceptable for program admission.
