Planning to Improve
If curriculum alignment is necessary, possible action plan strategies include:
- Identify a consistent standardized curriculum alignment model to be used across all grade levels and subject areas
- Formalize a specific work plan with time for:
- curriculum committees to meet on an ongoing basis (i.e. PreK-12, cross-curricular, etc.)
- committee members to share their work with non-committee members to review and revise as necessary
- Establish a schedule for curriculum alignment work that includes opportunities to:
- examine local and state data
- review current research and best practices
- ensure alignment with state, local, or national standards, instructional strategies and assessments
- make sure the curriculum includes 21st Century learning skills
- to identify gaps and overlaps
- check for horizontal and vertical alignment
- ensure the curriculum meets the needs of diverse learners
- ensure that parents and community members have been made aware of and have had an opportunity to provide input into the process when appropriate
- Develop a PreK-12 curriculum guide in a written format that has addressed all of the above areas and is understandable and able to be effectively implemented
- Schedule corresponding professional development activities to assist with implementation
